SCL 2:COMPUTER SOFTWARE

2.Discuss different types of treats and malicious program (malware) that can damage a computer, mobile device or distrupt any system.
Search for information on current known malware program.Based on the information that you have found, create a table to list different types of malware, what it does, and how it can be repaired or removed. These information is useful for you to prevent any malware from damage your computer system.
Types of malware
How it does
How it can be repaired
Viruses
·         Corrupt or delete data on your computer.
·         It makes changes or deletes your data.
·         It can enter to a computer as an attachment of images, greeting or audio/video files.
·         It also enter through download on the internet.
·         Not opening suspicious e-mail or e-mail attachments from unknown or known sender.
·         Not clicking on suspicious Web browser popup windows
·         Not visiting Web sites that are at least somewhat likely to contain malicious content.
·         Not opening file  with fileextensions that are likely tobe associated with malware(example: .bat,.com,.exe,.pif,.vbs)
·         Not disabling the additional security control mechanisms(example: antivirus software, spyware, detection and removal utility, personal firewall)
·         Not using administer-level account for regular operation.
·         Not downloading or executing applications from untrusted sources.
Worms
·         It makes copies of themselves again and again on the local drive, network share and so on.
·         It spread by exploiting vulnerabilities in operating systems.
·         It consumes more cpu uses which in turn makes the pc too slow alsoconsumes more network bandwidth.
Trojan
·         It opens a backdoor entry to your computer which gives malicious program acces to your computer system.
·         It also allowing confidential and personal information to be theft.

SCL 2:COMPUTER SOFTWARE QUESTION 1

1. What is open source software?

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code  made available and licensed with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose. Open-source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open-content movements.

2. In your opinion, why people prefer open source software over proprietary alternatives nowadays?

In my opinion, open Source's proponents often claim that it offers significant benefits when compared to typical commercial products. Commercial products typically favour visible features (giving marketing advantage) over harder-to measure qualities such as stability, security and similar less glamorous attributes. As a shorthand, we shall describe this phenomenon as quality versus features.
Open Source Software developers are evidently motivated by many factors but favouring features over quality is not noticeable amongst them. For many developers, peer review and acclaim is important, so it's likely that they will prefer to build software that is admired by their peers. Highly prized factors are clean design, reliability and maintainability, with adherence to standards and shared community values preeminent.

3. Name top (fives) 5 most popular open source software and compare them with similar proprietary software (e.g. Open Office versus Microsoft Office).

-songbird as a possible alternative to iTunes
-Infrarecorder  as a possible alternative to Nero Burning ROM, Roxio Creator
-Mixxx as a possible alternative to Traktor Scratch, Scratch Live
-Mute as a possible alternative to BearShare, Kazaa, Warez
-Mplayer as a possible alternative to Windows Media Player

SCL 3 : OPERATING SYSTEM AND FILE MANAGEMENT
Question 1:
List all the operating system used in a desktop/laptop today and find good descriptions on how operating systems work? Hence state their advantages and disadvantages.

Types of operating systems used in laptop and desktop nowadays,

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Mac OS
  • UNIX and Linux
  • DOS (Disk Operating System
An Operating System (OS) is a  type of system software that controls the overall operation of a computer. The purpose of an operating system is to organize and control hardware and software so the device lives in behaves in a flexible but predictable way.

More expensive than the other operating system
Open to virus attacks
Mac OS
Custom made to work with Apple's hardware
Much more secure OS and is far less open to viruses and malware
Stable- it very rarely crashes, loses data or freezes
The price cost more than other OS
Fewer computer programs and games are available

SCL Question 2

Select another group for comparing your hardware specification

with and justify why your specification is better than the selected

group.

The group that we choose to compare our hardware

specification  is Group 12. Microprocessor that we choose is Intel

Core i5-3337U while they choose Intel Core i7-4770R. Even

though Intel Core i7-4770R is the latest microprocessor than Intel

Core i5-3337U, as a students, a microprocessor with Intel Core

i5-3337U is enough because we just used it for casual

web-browsing, some downloads and even games. We choose the

same operating system which is the latest and the fastest Microsoft

Windows 8. For now, Microsoft Windows 8 is the most ideal

operating systems for us as a user compared to the older operating

systems such as Windows 7, Windows Vista and many more. With

the laptop that we have choose, it have 15.6" Widescreen 10- point

multi-touch display, Acer Instant Connect and bluetooth

technology.
